NAIC AI Evaluation Tool
A worksheet the NAIC released to help insurers and examiners assess AI governance programs against the expectations in the NAIC Model Bulletin.
The NAIC AI Evaluation Tool is a detailed worksheet that state insurance examiners and insurers can use to evaluate an insurer’s AI governance program against the NAIC Model Bulletin. It is organized around four exhibits:
- Exhibit A: Governance, risk management, and internal controls.
- Exhibit B: Risk assessments of AI systems used in insurance practices.
- Exhibit C: Acquisition, development, and use of AI systems, including generative AI.
- Exhibit D: Documentation and record-keeping requirements.
The tool is not itself a regulation. It is a supervisory aid. But because it maps exam expectations to the Bulletin, insurers often treat it as the practical checklist for compliance. Our guide to the NAIC AI Evaluation Tool walks through the exhibits and what documentation is typically expected.
