Data Governance

The framework for managing data quality, access, lineage, and compliance across the enterprise, including data used by AI systems.

Data governance is the framework for managing the availability, usability, integrity, and security of data across an organization. It covers data quality, data ownership, access controls, retention policies, and compliance with privacy and security regulations.

For AI systems, data governance is the foundation of model governance. A model cannot be fair, accurate, or explainable if its inputs are not understood, controlled, and documented. Data governance ensures that AI training data, production inputs, and external data sources are tracked and managed.

Data governance also connects to vendor management. When a vendor hosts or processes insurer data, the carrier must still know where the data goes, how it is used, and whether it is retained appropriately. See our glossary entries on data lineage, data minimization, and external consumer data.
